85% of Gunnison County is owned by the govenment through the BLM, Forest Service and wilderness areas. If you are into fishing by boat or on the ice you have three great places to choose from. About 15 miniutes from Gunnison is Blue Mesa Lake, Colorado's largest man-made lake wth three marinas to choose from. Iola, Elk Creek and The Lake Fork are great places to drop your boat and start fishing, water skiing or just to have a great time. Taylor Lake at Taylor Park, Colorado, is know for its great motorized and non-motorized recreation. Along with great camping, fishing, hiking, ATV and dirt bike trails there is a wonderful trading post and seasonal restaurant. Lake San Cristobal in Lake City, Colorado, has some spectacular views, great fishing and wonderful Jeeping tours. Crested Butte, Colorado, has some great skiing, snowmobiling, hiking and biking adventures. After the snow melts and the wildflowers are in bloom you can ride the chair lift to the top of the ski area and ride your bike down the mountain. Crested Butte also hosts the Wild Flower Festival which is a must see event!
Gunnison County also hosts some of the best hunting and wildlife viewing in Colorado. In the summer evenings you might be lucky to see a cow moose and her calf graizing in a meadow near Lake City or above Pitkin, Colorado. Other times during the summer and fall you may see Elk, Mule deer, Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep, Pronghorn Antelope, Mountain Lion, Coyote and the elusive Black Bear. Just remember these animals are wild and you don't want to approach them at any time. Not matter what your sport, there is an area for it all!
Gunnison is also the home of Western State College. Why rent when you can buy your student a place to live and study and when they graduate you have a great rental investment.
